WHY WE MURPH ON MEMORIAL DAY

You don't have to be a CrossFit person to "Murph" . . . Although it has become ingrained as part of their lives. Many Crossfit gyms will hold a "Murph" every Memorial Day. It is a very challenging event that is performed in the memory of those we have lost.

WHAT IS “MURPH”?

Murph is a Workout of the Day performed by athletes and fitness enthusiasts all around the world on Memorial Day. What does it consist of?

  • 1 Mile Run
  • 100 Pull-Ups
  • 200 Push-Ups
  • 300 Air Squats
  • 1 Mile Run
  • (*RX: Wearing a 20# weight vest)

For Time!!

How did this event come about?

This workout is a tribute to those we have lost, named after LT. Michael Murphy, a Navy Seal who was KIA in Afghanistan on June 28th, 2005. For his actions on that day, to support his team, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

The "Murph" workout, as we know it, was training regularly performed by LT. Michael Murphy. He called the workout "Body Armor" mainly because he performed the exercises wearing his plate carrier. Many today carry on the tradition by doing the timed event in a 20# workout vest.

Take time this Memorial Day to remember the true reason for the holiday. Take a moment to remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. You can show support and pay tribute by performing a Murph . . . This is much more than going to the gym to try and set a new PR. Because of the fallen, we continue to hold our freedoms in this great country. So as you look down at your bleeding hands from pull ups, and you struggle to complete that last mile . . . Remember why you are doing this and dig a little deeper.
